Dirk Nowitzki said something after Germany's Olympic exit that will be music to Mark Cuban's ears: He won't play international ball for the next couple years. "I achieved my first goal -- playing basketball for Germany in the Olympics," Nowitzki told reporters in Beijing. "Now my main goal is to win the NBA championship. We'll have to wait and see how things develop with Germany in the years ahead." Brad Townsend has much, much more on what might have been Dirk's final game for Germany on our Olympics blog. The entry "Dirk's done with international ball for awhile" has no entry tags. As I have been going through hoops withdrawal for the last month, I decided to rise early Monday and watch Dirk Nowitzki and Germany play the U.S. team in the final game of pool play in the Olympics. It should be required viewing for every kid, especially those who think they are hot stuff. Dirk was absolutely helpless. The U.S. put a defender on Dirk all over the court and had runners coming at him, usually two extra defenders, whenever he touched the ball. If he didn't take a quick shot, he got no shot at all. And, of course, with precious little talent around him on the German team, Nowitzki and his pals had no chance. They were hammered by 49 points. Dirk is a humble superstar. He's an MVP. But put him on a team with no other NBA-caliber players except for Chris Kaman, and you find out real fast why basketball is a team game and not a one-on-one exhibition. If it were, Kobe Bryant would have won the NBA title over Kevin Garnett. But that's not the way it works, thankfully. If the Germans had Jason Terry or Josh Howard on the wing waiting to shoot instead of a bunch of guys who need to buy more vowels for their last names, the U.S. wouldn't have been as quick to run three defenders at Dirk. It's called team basketball. By the way, there are some NBA players who should watch that video, too. I now return you to another couple weeks of boredom before we start talking NBA full time. The entry "That's why it's a team game" has no entry tags. Dirk sat down late in the third quarter with his German squad trailing the Redeem Team by 39 points. His Olympic experience will end with a 1-4 record. And, more importantly to MFFLs, a clean bill of health. In other Olympics news, Jason Kidd is shooting 100 percent from the floor during the Beijing Games. |
