Happy 4th of July

Here's hoping all you cyberheads out there have a great holiday and get to enjoy a long weekend with beer, hot dogs, fireworks and beer.

By the way, as I sit here eagerly awaiting the world hot-dog eating contest, it struck me that this is the perfect time to throw out the only possible trade scenario that the Mavericks can legitimately consider.

Brandon Bass is their only true trade chip. This assumes that they aren't going to deal Dirk Nowitzki or Jason Kidd. And that nobody is willing to give fair value for Josh Howard.

After that, it's Bass, who is young and perceived to be a rising, capable big man.

This isn't to say that the Mavericks should trade him. Or that they will. It's just that he's their most valuable chip right now. Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson will have to swallow hard if teams come running with offers for Bass.

The best guess from here is that they hold onto things as they are until the calendar turns to 2009. At that point, they will know what they have. They either have a contender or not.

Only then will they know if it's time to deal their youngest, brightest asset. And as hard as it is to find young talent and hold onto it, they will have to be dead-certain that it's the right thing to do. If not, better to keep a big man as a building block for the future.

Now, it's on wiith the hot-dog eating.

By the way, did I mention that I hope all of you have a few beers this holiday weekend?

A clarification

The Mavericks were able to sign Gerald Green on Thursday.

The moratorium on signings and trades lasts until Wednesday. But there's a reason why the Mavericks were able to go ahead and get Green under contract.

Since Green was not with any team at the end of last season, he was eligible to sign a minimum-wage contract at any time. This provision is made available for teams so they can sign summer-league players without having to wait until the moratorium is over.

The Mavericks put Green through a physical on Wednesday and expect him to play in the La$ Vega$ summer league.

Let's hear it for the Dusters

If the people of OKlahoma City and NBA franchise owner Clay Bennett have any sense, they will name the relocated Sonics the "Oklahoma Dusters.''

Or if they wish, the "Oklahoma City Dusters.''

It's original and it's catchy, although I also liked the idea of having the Oklahoma City Sonics, simply because it would have been fun to hear TV talking heads stumble over it and get it vulgarly wrong, if you know what I mean.

But the Sonics' name and colors are staying in Seattle.

So the Dusters, it should be.

This harkens back to the early '80s when the Mavericks were being named. I was a big fan of having them called the Dallas 'Tronics. As in, Electronics, since that's what our fair town is largely known for.

But they went with Mavericks, much to the chagrin of the UT-Arlington Mavericks.

What we have to hope is that the Oklahomans don't go for something stupid like, oh, say, the Oklahoma Sooners.

Or the Oklahoma Boomers.

Or the Cowboys. Or the Indians.

Don't do something stupid. This is the name that this franchise will be known by forever.

Or at least until it moves again in five years.

J.J. on his way back

Word out of Puerto Rico is that J.J. Barea has agreed to a three-year deal with the Mavericks.

Not sure about the validity of this yet. Heck, most of the NBA hasn't even woken up yet.

But the Mavericks were adamant about wanting Barea back and if his salary starts about about $1.5 million, it's an inexpensive backup point guard who has shown he can help in certain situations.

Slowly but surely, the roster if filling up.

Diop is on his way back

The Mavericks have re-acquired DeSagana Diop. Or at least, they will on July 9.

NBA sources confirmed Wednesday that the 7-foot center has agreed in principle on a multiyear contract that will bring the free agent back to Dallas.

Apparently, it cost the Mavericks their entire mid-level exception, which is expected to be around $5.5 million, for the first-year salary.

The maximum term for a mid-level exception is five years.

Diop was with the Mavericks for nearly three years before getting sent to New Jersey as part of the Jason Kidd trade. He grew into a solid defensive player, a good shot-blocker and a positive influence in the locker room.

The Mavericks went into this off-season shy on big people. Erick Dampier was the only legitimate center on the roster. Dirk Nowitzki and Brandon Bass were the only power forwards.

Diop's addition gives the Mavericks the same center tandem that served them well during their 2006 run to the NBA Finals.
